I just finished watching the third season of a show called “The Way Home,” and I am obsessed! It’s about three generations of women (a grandma, her daughter, and her granddaughter) who are forced to confront their past through a pond that allows them to time-travel. There are many twists and turns, but it’s ultimately a show about love, family, and grief. I’d say grief is the show’s main character because it always pops up. If characters aren’t grieving people, they’re grieving moments or decisions they’ve made or were too chicken to make.
My favorite character is Colton, who’s the patriarch of the Landry clan. He’s a dreamer, a devoted family man, and a loverboy to his core (he doesn’t play about his Del, the grandmother). I found myself in tears during the last episode when Alice, a young woman he spent time with in the 70’s and 90’s, confirms that she is his granddaughter. Though she can’t tell him much about the future, she does confirm a major part of his, and it’s an emotional moment for both of them. I think it was emotional for me because it made me think of my brother and all the moments we’ll never have. Sometimes I wish time travel were a thing. I’d rush back to a time he was alive, do an Alice, and just exist in a space with him. Unfortunately, that’s not how life works, and, as the show keeps reminding the Landry clan, stealing time you weren’t meant to have could cause even bigger messes.
Anyways, I’m excited to see where the final season of “The Way Home” takes us. I hope the entire family is reunited, and I hope Elliot (a close family friend and, in many ways, Colton’s second son) is treated better — he’s deeply undervalued. Kat, Alice’s mom, acknowledged that he has been taken advantage of for years, so I’m hopeful that they will be more considerate of him. Also, I really need to know how KC Goodwin is related to the Landrys. Are they Alice’s child? Grandchild? Cousin? I need the new season ASAP!
