“Between Two Seas” is an anthology by Cerece Rennie Murphy that consists of four short but meaty stories that each include some element of science fiction.
My favorite story was…
“Blue Honey.” “Blue Honey” is a story about a man who’s desperate to find a cure for his son’s incurable disease. Charles, the father, is a mad scientist meets John Q type of figure. He’s so consumed with finding a cure that he completely neglects himself and Tut (his son). Just when you think all hope is lost, Charles makes a prehistoric discovery in his backyard that could destroy the world as much as it could save Tut.
I enjoyed…
The care that Murphy seemed to take when constructing the characters. Everyone felt deliberate and meaningful to the stories. No character or word felt unnecessary.
I didn’t enjoy…
How short the first story was. As soon as it began it was ending and I was like, Okay, we’re done? It’s basically a story about nature and mythical creatures getting revenge.
I rate this book…
Five stars. Each story was beautifully written, each character felt well thought out and, despite being short stories, I really appreciate that I got to see each of the main characters grow. The plots were solid and each story felt complete. Of course, I want to know more about each of them but I don’t feel like I need to and I think that’s a testament to the quality of Murphy’s writing.
Would you recommend?
I recommend this book to anyone looking to get lost into four completely different worlds; two offer wild rides and the other two offer all the feels.
