I decided to kick Black History Month off right by attending the opening night of “From the Victoria to the Village: A Visual History of Black Creative Spaces” at the Apollo stages at the Victoria Theater. It was cool!
“Despite our age gap, experiencing Harsley’s photos felt like getting a much-needed hug from my childhood.”
Photographer and gallerist Alex Harsley showed a collection filled with nostalgia and history from 1959 onward. The info plaque (I forgot what you call those things) described it best: “This exhibition, curated by Harsley’s daughter Kendra Krueger, showcases the interconnectedness of Black artists, activists, celebrities, and the sacred camaraderie of everyday street life in their communities.” Despite our age gap, experiencing Harsley’s photos felt like getting a much-needed hug from my childhood.
Here’s a glimpse at some of my favorites (you might see a few familiar faces 😉).
