Last night’s Billboard Music Awards was full of Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris’ PDA, and flat jokes (or compliments depending on how you look at it) from Chrissy Teigen about… Well, Chrissy Tiegen. I had no idea what to expect from her as a host since I don’t know much about her, other than she’s married to John Legend and models. But I guess she can now add host to her résumé, so that’s a plus. Ludacris, on the other hand, was surprisingly quiet. At one point I actually forgot that he was the second host. Not sure why he didn’t get as much camera time as Teigen.
Anyways, here’s a quick rundown of the show followed by the winners of the most sought after categories:
Kendell and Kylie Jenner got booed when they introduced Kanye West, who gave a pretty interesting performance (to say the least). If you were watching it on TV you heard a lot of nothing and saw A LOT of this:
Apparently, it was supposed to look like that (something to do with his artistic vision, I’m guessing). Ye’s blaming ABC for the sound though. “Kanye West was grossly over-censored at the Billboard Music Awards. Non-profane lyrics such as ‘with my leather black jeans on’ were muted for over 30 second intervals. As a result, his voice and performance were seriously misrepresented,” he said in a statement via his publicist, according to Billboard.
Speaking of performances, Ed Sheeran’s was just… *sigh* Why is his voice so perfect? He put on an acoustic performance of “Bloodstream” while a large projection of himself mimicked his every move in the background.
Another standout for the night was the premier of Swift’s “Bad Blood” video featuring Kendrick Lamar, which had cameos galore! Celena Gomez, Zendaya, Gigi Hadid, Cara Delevigne, Lena Dunham and Serayah (Tiana from Empire) to name a few. The vid was cute; it had a Kill Bill meets The Terminator type of vibe going on.
Sam Smith, who recently had surgery one his vocal chords, gave a silent speech with cue cards for his Top Male Artist win.
Meghan Trainor seemed genuinely surprised by her Top 100 song win and couldn’t hold back her tears. “I just want everyone to learn to love themselves and I’m glad this song is working,” she said through sniffles. She also performed “Like I’m Gonna Lose You” with John Legend.
Overall, the show was decent.
